DRM Announcements

Widevine Browser CDM - Security Update - August 2024

The CDM release is completed and the revocation is on track for Oct 31.

The new Widevine CDM no longer supports Windows 7 or Windows 8 as Chrome desktop browser is no longer supported on Windows 7 or Windows 8.

If your service needs to support Windows 7 or 8 platforms, you must override the revocation and allow the older CDM to function. By doing so, you are acknowledging the risk of losing content to a known vulnerable CDM.

Widevine Announcement - 30/07/2024

Widevine is updating clients for all desktop browser platforms in order to address security issues. Most prominently, this includes the Google Chrome browser on PC and Mac.

  • What is the possible impact?
Google will soon deprecate the Widevine Content Decryption Module (CDM) which is currently in use on desktop browsers. End users who will not have updated their desktop browser by then will not be able to make use of Widevine DRM licenses. This can result in video playback failing. However, the large majority of browsers will automatically update and the end-user experience will be seamless.

  • Timeline of the rollout:

    • August 14, 2024 - Chrome 128 stable release, initial rollout.
    • August 20, 2024 - Chrome 128 stable release, available at 100%.
    • September 03, 2024 - New CDM available to other Chromium-based browsers.
    • October 31, 2024 - All prior CDMs are revoked and deactivated.
    • After October 31, end users may run into issues trying to play any Widevine DRM-protected content on desktops (PCs and Macs), if they have not updated their browsers. This applies to Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers.
  • Is Axinom ready?
Yes. We have already taken care of any necessary steps to support the upcoming Widevine clients.

  • Do I need to take action?
Cloud customers: no action required. Axinom cloud components are kept up-to-date as needed.
On-premises customers: remember to regularly update the Device Certificate Status List.

Widevine Announcement - 01/12/2022

Widevine policy is to support desktop browser versions for the past 12 months. For Chromium-based platforms, this means support for M97 or later versions.

Browsers older than M97 (Chrome or Chromium) will not be configured to download the latest Widevine desktop browser CDM.

Note: The Widevine desktop browser CDM is technically compatible with earlier versions of Chromium but we will only support Chromium versions in the past 12 months.
